Stainless box frame tacked up on a fixture table in the shop

Winery welding and fabrication in McMinnville.

Stainless tank repairs, tank stands, catwalks and crush pad equipment. The welding truck comes to the cellar or the crush pad, and bigger builds are made in our McMinnville shop.

I'm definitely going to continue hiring Neal's Mobile Welding moving forward for my winery.Erich B., Google review, 5 stars

Built for wine country

McMinnville sits in the middle of Willamette Valley wine country. The Dundee Hills, the Eola-Amity Hills and the McMinnville AVA are all a short drive from our shop on Bunn Road. Wineries here run on stainless and steel, and most of it works hardest at harvest, when a broken press or a leaking tank can't wait a week for a shop.

Most winery equipment is stainless steel. It stands up to the acid in juice and wine, resists rust and cleans well. It comes in grades, usually 304 or 316, and the filler is matched to the grade so the repair resists corrosion as well as the metal around it. I TIG weld stainless, which keeps the heat tight. Too much heat leaves a dark tint beside the weld, and tinted stainless rusts more easily, so heat control is what keeps a repair from staining later.

Clean welds matter more here than on a trailer. A rough bead or a pit can trap juice and residue where a wash can't reach. Welds on surfaces that touch juice or wine are ground and finished smooth, so they clean as easily as the tank around them. Catwalks, racks and other bigger builds are made on the fixture table in the shop and installed on site.

What I do

  • Stainless tank repairs, including seams, fittings, ports and legs
  • Tank stands, supports and cradles
  • Catwalks, platforms, stairs and ladders, with rails covered under handrails and gates
  • Crush pad equipment, including press and destemmer frames, hoppers and conveyors
  • Barrel racks and bin frames
  • Stainless brackets, mounts and tables in 304 or 316
  • Vineyard tractors and implements, covered under heavy equipment repair
  • A 24-hour emergency line through harvest

Grades, in plain terms

304
The everyday grade, and the one most winery tanks and equipment are made from
316
Adds molybdenum, which holds up better to chlorides, the salts in sea water and some cleaners
Filler
Matched to the grade, so the weld resists corrosion as well as the tank does
Finish
Welds that touch juice or wine are ground smooth, so they clean like the rest of the surface

Not sure which grade you have? Send a photo of the equipment and its tag, and we'll work it out.

Winery jobs we do most

Tanks, crush pad equipment and the steel around them. These are the repairs wineries call about most, and the bigger builds made in the shop.

The calls we get most

  • Stainless tank repairsCracked welds, leaking seams, loose fittings and ports, and broken legs. Rewelded with stainless filler matched to the tank and finished smooth, so it cleans like the rest of the tank.
  • Crush pad equipmentCracked frames and brackets on destemmers, presses, hoppers and conveyors, repaired right on the crush pad so the fruit keeps moving.
  • Harvest breakdownsWhen something breaks mid-harvest, call the 24-hour line. One winery forklift got a hitch ball welded through a fork within the hour.
  • Vineyard equipmentTractor implements, trailers, and steel trellis end posts and anchors that bent or broke, welded out in the rows.

Bigger jobs

  • Tank stands and supportsNew stands and legs, or old ones reinforced, so a full tank sits level and stays put.
  • Catwalks, platforms and laddersWalkways along the tank tops, with stairs, ladders and rails, measured in the cellar and built to fit it.
  • Barrel racks and bin framesRacks and frames sized to your barrels or bins, tacked square on the fixture table, then fully welded.
  • Brackets, mounts and tablesMade in 304 or 316 stainless to suit the job, TIG welded and finished smooth.

$250

call-out, within an hour's drive

Covers the trip and about the first two hours on the job. Custom work is estimated free from your photos. Repairs are priced on site.

What changes the price

  • DistanceInside an hour's drive, the $250 call-out covers the trip. Longer drives are priced and agreed before I leave.
  • MaterialAluminum and stainless take more time and shielding gas than mild steel.
  • AccessIf the truck can't park close, running cables and gear to the work adds time.
  • PrepRust, paint and grease come off first, and cracked or thin metal gets cut out. A weld is only as strong as the metal under it.
  • Plate and partsNew steel, extra plate and replacement parts are added to the bill.
It was a complicated job a lot of different parts that had to line up and all stainless steel.

Neal is amazing. I needed someone to come out before harvest to equip my forklift with a hitch ball through one of the forks. Not only did he come within an hour, he completed the job in record time. I'm definitely going to continue hiring Neal's Mobile Welding moving forward for my winery. Solidly endorse.

Nothing but good things to say about Neal's Mobile Welding Service. Have had a fishing boat that needed some modifications to assist in access for disabled fishing. Neal came out and took a look at what I wanted, made some great recommendations, we discussed cost and came to a very readonable agreement. We worked out date and time, he was at my shop for most of a day and now I have a few bits of wiring to complete and the boat will be ready to get wet. If you are looking for a businessman that will treat you fairly and does awesome Welding no matter the material (stainless steal, aluminum, or steel)I would Highly recommend you give Neal's Mobile Welding Service a call, you will not be disappointed.

Neal went above and beyond to repair a critical piece of equipment for my site in a timely manner. He is a true professional in both customer service and technical skills. Neal inquired about the repair before visiting my site to ensure he had a plan of action, necessary tools, supplies, etc. Once on site, he consulted with me to confirm best practices for the repair. Repairs we made efficiently and effectively. Upon completion of repairs to the original problem Neal looked over the equipment and identified a second area of concern. He alerted me to the concern, and again, together we developed a plan for this repair. The equipment flawlessly performed the remainder of the season. Neal’s repairs didn’t just “fix” the problem, he strengthened the failure points to reduce the likelihood of another occurrence of failure.

Neal was easy to get a hold of and communicated well. He came out in a timely manner, did a beautiful job of fixing my arena harrow, and had fair pricing. He was easy to talk to and seemed very knowledgeable about his craft. I especially love that he is mobile, moving a 500 pound harrow that is not street legal would have been difficult. I would recommend Neal’s Mobile Welding!

I highly recommend Neal to do any custom welding. I called him with a request to do a bedknife repair on a reel mower that discontinued the part. He said I could bring it in and he’d look at it…he welded the fix on the spot same day. Great guy and great service!!! Thanks

Common questions

Cutting torch throwing sparks on steel pipe in Neal's McMinnville shop
Do you repair stainless wine tanks?

Yes. Cracked welds, leaking seams, fittings, ports and legs. Send a photo of the area and tell us what the tank holds. Plan on the tank being emptied and cleaned before any welding starts, and we'll go over the details when you call.

Why does stainless need special care?

Heat. Too much of it leaves a dark tint beside the weld, and that metal rusts more easily. Stainless is TIG welded with tight heat control and filler matched to its grade, so the repair holds up like the rest of the tank.

Can you come to the winery?

Yes. The welding truck comes to the cellar, the crush pad or the vineyard, as long as it can park close. Catwalks, racks and other larger builds are made in the McMinnville shop and installed on site.

What if something breaks during harvest?

Call the 24-hour emergency line. Harvest is when equipment breaks and can't wait, and urgent jobs move up the schedule whenever possible.

Do you build catwalks and platforms?

Yes. Walkways, stairs, ladders and rails around tanks, measured on site and built to fit. Commercial work has its own requirements, so if a permit or inspection is involved, mention it at the start and it's planned for.

What does mobile welding cost?

The call-out is $250 anywhere within an hour's drive, and it covers about the first two hours on the job. Longer trips cost more, and the price is agreed before I leave. Custom work gets a free estimate from your photos. Repairs are priced in person, because the right number depends on what the metal looks like up close.
